Humane announced on Tuesday that HP has acquired most of its assets for $116 million. As part of the deal, the hardware startup is discontinuing sales of its $499 AI Pins. Humane informed customers who have already purchased the device that it will stop functioning by 12 p.m. PST on February 28, 2025. After that date, the AI Pins will no longer connect to Humane’s servers, meaning users will lose access to calling, messaging, AI queries, and cloud services. The company has urged AI Pin owners to transfer any important data or photos to an external device as soon as possible.

Humane will also dissolve its customer support team for the AI Pin on February 28. According to an FAQ, customers who bought the device within the last 90 days are eligible for a refund, but those who purchased it before then will not be.

This marks the end of the brief, high-profile run of Humane, a hardware startup founded by former Apple employees Bethany Bongiorno and Imran Chaudhri. The company made waves in April 2024 with the launch of its AI Pin, which it marketed as a potential smartphone replacement. Humane raised over $230 million to develop the device but faced setbacks as early reviews and customer feedback were disappointing. At one point, returns for the AI Pin outpaced sales, according to The Verge. The company also told customers to stop using the device’s charging case due to concerns over battery fires, and in October, Humane dropped the AI Pin’s price by $200, reducing it from $699.

As part of the acquisition, HP will gain Humane’s engineers and product managers, who will join a new division called HP IQ. This AI innovation lab will focus on creating an intelligent ecosystem across HP’s products and services for the future of work. HP will also acquire some of Humane’s technology, including its CosmOS AI operating system. The operating system was recently shown in an ad as capable of running on a variety of devices, including a car’s entertainment system, smart speakers, TVs, and Android phones, which could help integrate AI into HP’s personal computers and printers.

Humane had initially sought to be acquired for between $750 million and $1 billion in May 2024, according to a Bloomberg report. Humane did not immediately respond to TechCrunch’s request for comment.
