KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) staged a protest rally on Sunday in Karachi against the Sindh government’s initiative to introduce Ajrak-themed vehicle number plates.

The rally, led by JI’s Karachi chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, started from Jail Chowrangi and culminated at M.A. Jinnah Road. Addressing a large crowd of supporters, Rehman criticized the move, terming it an attempt to distract from the province’s real problems.

He stated that while Ajrak is a proud symbol of Sindhi culture, using it on number plates was a “gimmick” and not a genuine service to the people. He argued that the government should instead focus on more pressing issues such as water shortages, poor infrastructure, failing healthcare, and the deteriorating education system in Sindh.

Rehman further alleged that the provincial administration is using cultural symbolism to cover up its failures and corrupt practices. He demanded that the government withdraw the Ajrak number plate scheme and redirect attention to improving the lives of Sindh’s residents.

The protest remained peaceful, with party workers holding banners and chanting slogans against what they described as the government’s misplaced priorities.
