In a significant medical milestone, Dr. Shah Khalid, a gold medalist neurosurgeon from Aga Khan Hospital, successfully performed the first-ever brain tumour surgery at Abbottabad District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital. The patient, a 33-year-old man from Mansehra who recently returned from Dubai, was diagnosed with a brain tumour.
Despite the lack of neuro-navigation equipment in the province, Dr. Khalid arranged for the necessary technology to be brought in from Lahore. Using advanced surgical techniques, he removed 95% of the tumour during a three-hour operation, with the remaining 5% planned for radiation therapy.
The patient is reported to be recovering well. Dr. Khalid also announced the establishment of a dedicated neuro unit at DHQ Abbottabad to provide comprehensive treatment for neurological conditions.
