RAWALPINDI/ISLAMABAD – Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir held a high-level meeting with Libyan Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Lieutenant General Saddam Khalifa Haftar on Thursday, where both sides agreed to enhance cooperation in defence production, training, and regional security coordination.

The Libyan military chief, accompanied by a delegation, was received at the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi with a formal guard of honour. He also laid a wreath at the Yadgar-e-Shuhada to pay tribute to Pakistan’s fallen soldiers.

During the meeting, the two military leaders discussed key areas of bilateral interest including technical defence collaboration, counterterrorism strategies, and enhanced training programs for Libyan forces in Pakistani institutions.

The Libyan delegation later called on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad. The prime minister expressed Pakistan’s willingness to broaden bilateral relations across defence, economic, and educational sectors. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and other senior officials were also present during the meeting.

Lieutenant General Haftar also met with Pakistan’s Naval Chief Admiral Naveed Ashraf. Discussions focused on maritime security cooperation and regional naval coordination.

This visit marks a revival of Pakistan-Libya military ties, which date back to earlier decades when Pakistan actively supported the development of Libya’s armed forces. The latest engagements are aimed at creating a formal mechanism for strategic collaboration, including the potential establishment of a tri-service coordination framework.

The renewed partnership is expected to bolster Libya’s efforts to modernize its military infrastructure, while also reinforcing Pakistan’s role in international defence training and cooperation.
