PESHAWAR — Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) has secured a reserved minority seat in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly following a mutual agreement with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), averting a coin toss initially suggested by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
The decision was finalized after discussions between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman. PML-N agreed to step back from contesting the seat, aiming to maintain political harmony and avoid allegations of manipulation or backdoor dealings.
As a result of this agreement, both PML-N and JUI-F now hold 17 seats each in the KP Assembly — including nine reserved for women and one for minorities. The arrangement also ensures smooth proceedings ahead of the Senate elections and reinforces coalition unity in the province.
The reserved seat allocation follows a recent Peshawar High Court ruling that overturned the previous distribution by the ECP and directed a fresh count of reserved seats for women and minorities. The amicable resolution between the two allied parties has helped avoid political uncertainty during this sensitive electoral period.
