SAN FRANCISCO: WhatsApp has announced a new set of features aimed at improving the quality and engagement of its video calls. The Meta-owned messaging platform is rolling out customizable video filters, virtual backgrounds, and enhancement tools such as “Touch Up” and “Low Light,” in an effort to offer a more dynamic and polished user experience.

The new additions include 10 virtual backgrounds—ranging from Office, Living Room, and Café to Beach, Forest, and quirky themes like Smoosh—allowing users to conceal cluttered surroundings or simply personalize their setting during calls.

Alongside backgrounds, WhatsApp is introducing 10 filters such as Warm, Cool, Black & White, and Vintage TV. These filters are similar to those already available on Instagram, also owned by Meta, and offer users the ability to shift the tone and atmosphere of their video feed.

The “Touch Up” and “Low Light” tools further improve video call aesthetics by subtly enhancing facial features and optimizing brightness in dim environments. According to WhatsApp, these features aim to help users feel more confident and comfortable during conversations.

“These updates make it easier for people to connect in ways that feel natural and fun, whether they’re catching up with friends or joining a family call,” a WhatsApp spokesperson said in a statement.

Users will be able to access these features by tapping the effects icon during a video call. The new tools are expected to be available globally to all WhatsApp users in the coming weeks.
