GAZA – The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has sounded the alarm over the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza, stating that the enclave is turning into a “graveyard for children” as starvation, displacement, and constant bombardment continue.
UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini, in a statement released Friday, warned that the ongoing Israeli military operations have pushed Gaza’s civilian population to the brink. He highlighted the severe food shortages, the collapse of health services, and the alarming number of child casualties.
“Children are dying not only from airstrikes but from hunger, dehydration, and a complete lack of medical care,” Lazzarini said. “This war is not only destroying buildings — it is destroying lives, especially the lives of the most vulnerable.”
He also criticized the obstruction of humanitarian aid, saying that relief efforts are being systematically hindered, leaving people with little to no access to essential supplies.
More than 1 million Palestinians have been displaced within the strip, many seeking shelter in overcrowded UNRWA facilities, which themselves have come under fire multiple times.
The UN has repeatedly called for an immediate ceasefire, access for humanitarian assistance, and protection of civilians in accordance with international law.
Israel has defended its actions as necessary to combat Hamas, which it accuses of using civilians as human shields. However, international outcry continues to grow over the rising civilian death toll and humanitarian impact.
