A year after being brutally maimed by a landlord in Sindh’s Sanghar district, Cammie the camel has taken her first steps on all four legs with the help of a prosthetic limb. The incident happened in June 2024 when the landlord severed her front leg as punishment for foraging in his field for fodder. The act sparked public outrage and led to the arrest of six suspects.
Following the incident, Cammie was taken in by the Comprehensive Disaster Response Services (CDRS) Benji Project for Animal Welfare in Karachi, where she underwent intensive rehabilitation. A custom-designed prosthetic leg, created in collaboration with experts abroad, was delivered two months ago. The prosthetic was fitted after ensuring that Cammie’s physical wound had healed and that she was mentally ready.
Recently, Cammie stood up for the first time since her mutilation, marking a significant milestone in her recovery. Her caregivers expressed immense joy and pride in her progress. The Sindh government had committed to covering the cost of her treatment, with local lawmakers actively supporting her rehabilitation.
This heartwarming development highlights the resilience of animals and the collective efforts of individuals and organizations to ensure their well-being.
