ISLAMABAD – The Supreme Court of Pakistan has underscored the importance of treating taxpayers with dignity and respect during the tax recovery process, urging authorities to avoid coercive or humiliating tactics.

A two-member bench led by Justice Mansoor Ali Shah issued these remarks during the hearing of a case related to tax recovery methods employed by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). The court emphasized that while tax collection is crucial for the country’s economy, it must not come at the expense of basic human dignity and constitutional rights.

Justice Shah highlighted that harassment or undue pressure on taxpayers not only discourages voluntary compliance but also undermines public confidence in the system. He stressed the need for a balance between effective tax enforcement and safeguarding citizens’ rights.

The court directed the FBR and relevant authorities to ensure that their recovery practices align with constitutional protections and principles of fairness. It also encouraged the adoption of transparent procedures and improved communication to resolve disputes amicably.

Legal experts view the Supreme Court’s observations as a significant step toward promoting taxpayer confidence and reforming the revenue system through more humane and transparent practices.
