The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) notified higher liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices for November on Saturday, raising the official rate to Rs294.07 per kilogram, up Rs14.73 from Rs279.34. A domestic cylinder of 11.8 kilograms now costs Rs3,470.09, an increase of Rs173.86 from Rs3,296.23.
In the open market, however, households are paying far more. LPG is selling for up to Rs630 per kilogram in parts of the country — more than double the official rate — while company-operated franchises are charging up to Rs400 per kilogram.
The gap between the notified price and the market price comes amid a shortage linked to the United States–Iran war and the closure of the Iranian border. Around 70 per cent of Pakistan’s LPG is imported from Iran, and the disruption to that supply has tightened availability at home.
Producer prices are linked to the Saudi Aramco contract price and the dollar exchange rate. A rise of 6.47 per cent in the Saudi Aramco contract price was cited in connection with the November increase.
Irfan Khokhar, chairman of the LPG Distributors Association, described the situation as serious. Ali Haider, chairman of the Pakistan LPG Marketers Association, warned of a strike from November 16 if the government implements the policy.
