RAWALPINDI: Barrister Salman Safdar met Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi at Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail on Monday, ending months without direct access to the incarcerated couple.

Safdar said in a post on X that the jail authorities facilitated the meeting at 4:30pm and that it lasted 40 minutes. It was his first meeting with Imran Khan in seven months and with Bushra Bibi in 11 months, after repeated applications and requests.

The lawyer described the 40-minute session as insufficient to cover all the cases and legal matters involving the couple. He said both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi briefed him on their health and living conditions in jail and gave him fresh instructions on some legal matters and cases. No details of those instructions have been made public.

Safdar, who is lead counsel in several cases involving the couple, last met Imran Khan on April 9, for consultation in the £190 million case. The Islamabad High Court (IHC) directed jail authorities on September 2 to ensure meaningful human interaction, family access, exercise, reading material and other facilities for the couple, and had earlier directed in June that a meeting with their counsel be arranged within seven days to complete formalities for appeals against their convictions in the £190 million reference.

Imran Khan has been in custody since August 2023. He and Bushra Bibi were sentenced on December 20, 2025, to 17 years in prison in the Toshakhana-II case, which concerns allegations that the couple unlawfully retained a Bulgari jewellery set gifted by the Saudi crown prince during an official visit to Saudi Arabia. Imran Khan also faces pending trials connected to the May 9, 2023 protests.
