Pakistan’s federal cabinet has ratified a defence cooperation agreement with Kuwait, approved designs for a new series of banknotes, and agreed to replace the Rs10 banknote with a Rs10 coin, according to a handout from the Prime Minister’s Office.

The cabinet met in Islamabad on Wednesday under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The defence pact, the handout said, was concluded on 11 June 2023 to build cooperation between the armed forces of the two countries, and Kuwait had already ratified it on 19 July. The agreement sets out a framework for military training, education, intelligence sharing, logistics, defence technology and exchanges of expertise, and will run for five years with automatic renewal unless either side ends it.

On currency, the cabinet acted on the Finance Ministry’s recommendation after designs were sought from artists and designers across the country and reviewed by a prime ministerial committee following consultations with stakeholders. Officials said the redesigned notes will carry stronger security features and use more durable materials, with the aim of curbing counterfeiting and extending how long notes stay in circulation. No date was announced for when the new notes or the Rs10 coin will enter circulation, and no timetable was given for withdrawing existing notes.

The same meeting transferred powers delegated to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister to Governor Faisal Karim Kundi, to handle routine administration during the emergency and governor’s rule imposed in the province on 11 October. The cabinet also finalised a comprehensive Rs160 billion development and security package for the province, and announced a transparent, competitive mechanism for allocating LPG quotas.

The decisions sit alongside the government’s continuing diplomatic effort to ease tensions in the Middle East, which the prime minister reviewed at the meeting.
