The United States carried out limited strikes against missile infrastructure on Iran’s Qeshm Island on Wednesday, a senior US official said, describing the operation as a “calibrated response” to what Washington called an imminent threat to American forces in the region.

The strikes come even as indirect talks between the two countries continue, with Pakistan mediating backchannel contacts in recent days. Iranian state media confirmed explosions on the island but said damage was limited and denied any senior commanders were hit.

“We remain committed to diplomacy, but we will not hesitate to act in self-defence,” the US official said. Tehran warned of a “decisive response” to any further attacks, raising fears of a wider escalation in the Gulf.

The operation marks the first direct US strike on Iranian soil since the June bombing campaign, and comes amid heightened tensions over shipping lanes near the Strait of Hormuz.

Regional capitals urged restraint, with Pakistan’s Foreign Office calling for “maximum restraint and a return to dialogue” in a late-night statement.
