Opposition leaders gathered on Wednesday evening at the Islamabad residence of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and agreed to strengthen their alliance and coordination in parliament, describing the meeting as a gathering of the “united opposition”.

Those present included National Assembly Opposition Leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai, who heads the Tehreek-i-Tahafuz-i-Ayeen-i-Pakistan (TTAP) alliance, Senate Opposition Leader Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, and PTI leaders Asad Qaiser, Salman Akram Raja, Amir Dogar and Senator Noorul Haq Qadri. The meeting discussed the emergency and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the supremacy of the Constitution, democratic rights and a joint political strategy.

Mr Achakzai said afterwards that the delegation had called on the Maulana to discuss building an alliance aimed at strengthening parliament. JUI-F and TTAP decided to form committees to resolve mutual differences and to take forward consultations on a multi-party conference. Mr Fazlur Rehman has been critical of the federal government over the imposition of governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, saying the Centre went back on commitments made while he was mediating between the federal and provincial governments.

PTI leaders also used the occasion to raise fresh concern about the health of party founder Imran Khan, who has been in prison since 5 August 2023. PTI said his blood pressure had surged to 192 the day before his meeting with his lawyer, Barrister Salman Safdar, and demanded his immediate transfer to Shifa International Hospital for treatment supervised by his personal physicians, citing a Supreme Court order of 18 August. The blood pressure figure is PTI’s claim and has not been independently confirmed as a medical finding; the party’s central information secretary, Sheikh Waqas Akram, said repeated fluctuations were a matter of extreme concern and that protecting Mr Khan’s health was the responsibility of the state.
